The problem

When you are new to woodworking, planning a cabinet by hand means doing the same fiddly arithmetic again and again: reveals, gaps, back panel play, hinge boring positions, System 32 hole rows and drawer box sizes for each type of slide. One wrong number costs real wood and an afternoon. And the result still has to be turned into a cut list, a drilling plan and a cutting plan for the sheets.

What it does

Marangos does that arithmetic for you. You describe the cabinet by its type and dimensions, choose the board, back and hardware, and get a consistent set of documents for the workshop: cut list, drilling schedule, bill of materials, assembly steps, sheet nesting with cut tickets, QR piece labels and a printable workshop PDF. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and the server stores nothing.

How it works

  1. Open the app and start from the demo template or continue your saved workspace.

  2. Pick a cabinet type, set width, height and depth, then the board, back type and hardware. The drawing updates as you type and green checks show that the dimensions add up.

  3. Read the results: cut list, drilling schedule, bill of materials, assembly steps and sheet nesting.

  4. Add more cabinets and arrange them side by side in the Layout view.

  5. Print or download the workshop PDF, labels, cut ticket and shopping list, and take them to the saw and the drill.

Key features

Parametric cabinets

Five cabinet types: base with doors, base with drawers, base combi, wall and tall. Set dimensions, board thickness, back type (groove, overlay or rebate), doors, shelves, drawers and front heights. A wide cabinet can be split into 2 to 5 sections, each with its own content, and legs, extended sides or no legs are all supported.

Parameters in, exact parts out (demo cabinet)

Hardware-aware drilling schedule

Concealed 35 mm hinges (full and half overlay), undermount and side-mount slides are modelled in the math. Switching a hardware profile resizes the drawer boxes and redrills the schedule: hinge cups, plate lines, slide positions, System 32 rows and joinery. The hardware numbers are editable defaults, and every hardware screen reminds you to check the installation sheet of the exact product you use.

Workshop PDF, built in your browser

One document for the workshop: title block, parts, dimensioned drawings, drilling schedule, assembly steps with a squareness check, and sheets. An optional beginner export adds a flat drawing for each part with every hole dimensioned from named edges, banded edges, grain direction and a "How to read this" legend. QR piece labels (70 x 37 mm, 14 per A4 sheet) carry the piece data itself, not a link.

Plan a whole run

Keep up to 40 cabinets in one workspace and place them side by side on a shared floor line, with snapping between edges. Save a configuration as a template and reuse it.

Plan a whole run of cabinets, not only one

Made for the workshop, in English and Greek

Plan on a desktop, then follow the cut list on a phone or tablet at the bench. The interface switches between English and Greek. The app also includes a bilingual tools and hardware reference with 214 entries and schematics, and an Ideas gallery of 69 free woodworking plans. The plans come from public third party sources and open on their publishers' sites; Marangos is not affiliated with those publishers.

  • Sheet nesting and cut tickets

The parts of all your cabinets are nested onto standard sheets with grain lock and an offcut report. You get a diagram per sheet, a plain-text cut ticket, and a combined bill of materials and shopping list across cabinets.

Security and privacy

  • No login, no account and no database. The server only serves static files and stores nothing.
  • Nothing is uploaded and there is no file import of any kind. The workshop PDF is created in your browser; everything else is a download.
  • Your workspace is saved in your own browser, on that device only. Saved data is checked against strict rules and recalculated before it is used again.
  • No analytics and no third-party scripts. The Content Security Policy only allows the app's own origin, and fonts are self-hosted.
  • Self-hosted on Mikael's own server in Greece (EU). Requests pass through Cloudflare, which provides TLS and the tunnel to the server.
  • The container runs as an unprivileged nginx with a read-only filesystem, all Linux capabilities dropped and no published ports. A proxy in front applies rate limiting.

Under the hood

The core is a pure TypeScript calculation engine with no framework imports and no runtime dependencies; every constant comes from editable presets. Drawings are SVG from a separate drafting module, sheet nesting runs in a web worker, and the PDF is rendered in the browser. The engine is checked with unit, property-based and end-to-end tests, visual regression, and 6 golden test vectors: hand-computed reference cabinets that it must reproduce exactly.

Marangos was built with AI agents and Mikael's own work. The agents speed up building and iterating, and a dedicated cabinet review agent checks every change to the calculation engine. Mikael sets the requirements, reviews the result and owns the security: built with AI agents, reviewed by a security professional.

Status and roadmap

Live

Live and public at maragos.tsakmak.com, free to use with no login. The cabinet builder, drilling, nesting, PDF, labels, Greek interface, tools reference and Ideas gallery are all available. Mikael has used it to build a real cabinet. A printable user guide is available in English (PDF) and Greek (PDF).

Planned, not built yet:

  • A 3D exploded view.
  • A kitchen run planner with fillers.
  • 1:1 drilling templates.
  • DXF export.

Scope by design: metric only, EU frameless (System 32) construction, no face frames, no curved work, no quoting, and nothing shared between devices.

Who it is for

Mikael is a new DIY carpenter. He built Marangos to get reliable measurements for the drawers and cabinets he makes for himself, and made it public and free for anyone it helps.

  • DIY carpenters building their first cabinets: get every part size and hole position worked out before cutting any wood.
  • DIY makers building drawers: get drawer box sizes that match the type of slide you plan to use.
  • DIY carpenters planning a set of cabinets: plan them together, nest all the parts onto standard sheets and take one cut ticket to the saw.
